Inspired by the photograph by Dorothea Lange taken in 1942, where “I AM AN AMERICAN” was displayed on a storefront in Oakland, CA the day after the Pearl Harbor attacks and the internment order, I recreated historic accounts of xenophobic print in America and then screenprinted “I AM AN AMERICAN” across them in the form of the Korean dojang.
The seal acts as a signature and seen as a reflection of someone’s life and personality. Next to it was a QR code leading to the resource page of stopaapihate.org.
I then wheatpasted them across the George Washington University campus in Washington, D.C.
