In the spring of 2022, as quarantine lifted, and we carried the uncertainty of sharing space and touch — I presented my bongseonhwa performance on opening night at the first Corcoran School of Arts and Design wide exhibition since the pandemic.
Over 2,000 visitors passed through that night and were invited to have their nails dyed using the petals and leaves of the rose balsam flower. Bongseonhwa something I did as a young girl during sleepovers watching K-dramas on VHS tapes, and a memory my mom shares growing up in the countryside doing it with her friends.
Rooted in my own memories of care embodied, the performance offered gestures of adornment as the place of collective liberation.
This also lives as a workshop series titled Bongseonhwa Flowerhands. That summer, The Nicholson Project in Washington, D.C., grew the flowers in their garden with the seeds from my own garden my mom and I tended during the height of lockdown and grief. More on Bongseonhwa Flowerhands here.
